On arriving at Dev Shree (most likely from Jaipur, Jodhpur or Udaipur depending on your itinerary), your gracious hosts, Shatrunjai and Bhavna, will welcome you. Here there’ll be time to settle in and soak up your idyllic green surroundings, looking out over a vast lawn to Ragho Sagar Lake, with a majestic backdrop of Gokul Fort perched high on a hill. The interiors of Dev Shree are just as pretty and inviting. The charming property reflects the traditional haveli style, with airy verandahs and bursts of bright colour. Each of the seven rooms is tiled with Makrana marble and offer a view of the gardens.

This evening, take a Jeep drive out into the surrounding countryside for a fascinating insight into the life of local people here. Aside from stunning landscapes and architecture scenes, you’ll also spot an ancient Hindu temple and an interesting stepwell, as well as shepherds with their cattle returning home for the day. The excursion ends on a special note with sundowners by the lake, taking in a gloriously warm and beautiful Indian sunset.

A stay at Dev Shree includes all meals as Shatrunjai and Bhavna want you to feel at home, rather than at a hotel. Bhavna sources organic vegetables from her on-site garden to include in her dishes, offering local specialities and North Indian favourites alongside more familiar European options.

This morning, you’ll start the day with a charmingly unique ride on the old nearby narrow-gauge train. As the train slowly chugs along the hills, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of a valley, gorges and distant ridges. Before easing into the plateau of Khamblighat station, you’ll stop at the small station of Goram Ghat, where you’ll be greeted by hordes of monkeys awaiting treats of biscuits and bananas from the regulars!

After having returned to Dev Shree for lunch, there’ll be a few hours in which to relax in your peaceful surroundings. Resting by the palm-fringed pool with a good book is heavenly! If you’re feeling active and would like to explore further, Shatrunjai and Bhavna have a range of activities on offer to suit all interests, and these can be arranged directly at the time. For example, you might like to embark on their Artisan Walk, passing through the local potters street and farmhouses, taking in bustling daily activities at the trading part of the village. Or a yoga class. Or tea at the local chai stall (owner Shatrunjai is happy to accompany guests to the nearby tea stall, where you can engage in an exciting conversation with the locals and learn more about their way of life).

We recommend ending the day bird watching by the lake. Ragho Sagar Lake is a peaceful spot attracting a colourful array of migratory birds. These are very welcome visitors of the hosts – Shatrunjai and Bhavna are avid bird watchers. Or, why not peep into the kitchen to get involved in the evening meal, learning how to prepare authentic local Rajasthani cuisine with the guidance of the chef.
